Apologies for no report last week but the caravan put on 4,000 miles in two trips to LA in less than 12 days.
This past week the caravan was at Foothill College in Los Altos Hills on Saturday for the West Catholic Athletic League playoff championships.
Although I’ve done public address announcing hundreds times, for the first time in a 30-year career of covering high school sports, yours truly was the color analyst for announcer and former De La Salle alum Pat O’Rourke on the live internet feed broadcast by BayPreps.com.
The Archbishop Mitty girls opened up the evening’s sweep by the San Jose school of both the girls and boys playoff titles with a convincing 63-47 victory over St. Ignatius of San Francisco.
In winning, Phillips’ charges left no doubt as to who is the top team in the CIF Central Coast Section.
Monarchs’ Sophomore Kelli Hayes led the way with 15 points. Senior guard Vanessa Garner had 13 points, nine rebounds, three steals and three assists. She was instrumental in taking control early and igniting a 17-2 run that more than erased a 10-7 early deficit.
Pepperdine-bound 6-foot-3 senior Amanda Lovely had a double-double 12 points and 10 rebounds. Junior Emily Dinger scored 11 points with three three-pointers, including two during the run.
“After the loss to SI and especially this week in practice we really turned it on,” said Lovely on the post-game live feed.
The boys completed the sweep by posting a 50-47 victory over Sacred Heart Cathedral of San Francisco. It was the third win this season over the Irish by a combined eight points.
Aaron Gordon started a little slow, and after the 6-foot-8 junior only had seven points and five rebounds, the defending Division II state champions were down 28-22 at the half. Gordon came alive in the second half on both ends of the floor and finished with 24 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks. Nine of his points came in the final period after the teams were tied 34-34 after three quarters.
“I was rushing in the first half,” Gordon said. “Down six at the half we said we have to be the team that wants it more.”
The caravan started the week on Wednesday night at the North Bay League semifinal 49-39 victory by Cardinal Newman (Santa Rosa) over cross-town Maria Carrillo.
It was win No. 620 for Newman Coach Tom Bonfigli who got No. 621 on Saturday when the Cardinals won his 11th NBL playoff title with a 58-46 victory over Rohnert Park Rancho Cotate.
