The caravan was busy last week.
On Friday night it was at Santa Rosa High to see Windsor complete a dream season with a 28-20 CIFNCS Division II win over Concord and its record setting running back Olito Thompson.
Saturday the scene was the Oakland Coliseum for the 49-13 De La Salle NCS Division I win over San Ramon Valley and the 20-18 Division III upset win by Campolindo over Marin Catholic.
After the CIF selection committee met last Sunday, three Bay Area teams were selected to compete in Carson this weekend in the CIF State Bowl Games. Regardless of the outcome, it will not affect these rankings so this will be the final PrepFeed-Abend rankings for the fall.
ESPNHS Cal-Hi Sports state top-ranked De La Salle will go for its fourth title in six years when it meets No. 2 Westlake (Westlake Village) in the Saturday night 8 p.m. Open Division contest that is California’s version of the BCS 1 versus 2 match-up.
Not only have the two teams never met, this will be the first time the Spartans have played a team from any of the leagues in that part of Los Angeles or Ventura Counties.
Bellarmine will square off against Santa Margarita Catholic (Rancho Santa Margarita) in Friday night’s marquee game in a match-up of two longtime coaches with outstanding records.
Bells 28-year head coach Mike Janda will bring a 210-93-3 record into the game in an effort to even his CIF Bowl Game record to 1-1. In 2009 Bellarmine lost 24-19 in Carson to Oceanside.
“They do have a lot of big guys up front but we take a lot of pride in what we do running the ball. We’re up to the challenge and will definitely stick with what’s gotten us here so far,” Janda told Cal-Hi Sports.
Those big guys will try to deliver a third Bowl Game title for the coach they call “Dirty Harry” in the Southland, Santa Margarita head coach Harry Welch.
The 29-year veteran Welch (242-50-2) will be trying to win his third CIF Bowl Game at his third different school. His 2006 Canyon (Canyon Country) team defeated De La Salle 27-13 in the Division I game. In 2008 his St. Margaret’s (San Juan Capistrano) beat Hamilton (Hamilton City) 59-7 in the Division IV contest.
The third Bay Area team making the trip down south is Campolindo. The Cougars rode the arms and legs of junior quarterback Brett Stephens and the foot of sophomore kicker Cristian Antezana to victory over Marin Catholic.
Antezana, an unlikely hero, split the uprights from 21-yards out as time expired, and Campolindo snatched victory from the jaws of defeat. It was his second field goal of the second half and Campolindo’s only points in the final two quarters.
Antezana came through, but for the second week in-a-row it was the escape ability of quarterback Stephens that put the Cougars in a position to win.
After Marin Catholic took its only lead of the game on a 25-yard field goal with 2:18 remaining, Stephens got busy in a hurry. Starting from his own 36-yard line, the senior signal-caller did exactly the same thing to Marin Catholic as he did to Cardinal Newman last week.
After escaping a sack, Stephens criss-crossed the field and found Mason Windatt all alone down the left sideline and launched deep for a 44-yard reception at the Wildcats’ 20-yard line. Five plays later Antezana punched it through.
The Cinderella squad will play Washington of Easton in the CIF Division III Bowl Game at 12 noon on Saturday. Washington, from the metro Fresno area is also undefeated at 13-0 and will carry the banner as the first team for the CIF Central Section to play in a CIF Bowl game.
